The Mendocino Theatre Company has been entertaining audiences since 1976 in their intimate, 75 seat theater. Every season, a mix of talented and passionate amateur and professional actors stage about half a dozen plays, ranging from comedy to drama to farce, often with an underlying theme connecting the selections. The productions are polished and the acting is high quality.
Recently remodeled, the theater is comfortable and designed with a clear sight line to the stage from all seats. The size of the theater allows the audience to truly immerse themselves in the play and feel close to – and sometimes, part of – the action.
Don’t miss the diminutive, yet fully stocked bar in the pretty lobby, with its welcoming sofas and posters of past productions. The friendly and skillful bartender creates a special libation for each show, themed with colors or ingredients, such as the Blackbird, a black cocktail with blue curaçao, vodka, lime, and cranberry juice, garnished with blueberries to go with the play “Blackbird”, or the Purple Finch, made of vodka, Chambord, triple sec, and lemon, a rather formal drink in honor of “The Dining Room”. Best of all, playgoers are positively encouraged to bring their drinks and snacks into the theater to enjoy during the performance.
In addition to the regular season, the Mendocino Theatre Company stages readings throughout the year, generally on Wednesdays, where the actors perform without costumes or sets, just using the power of their voices and expression as they read from the script. It is a refined and refreshing experience that allows the audience to truly focus on the words and meaning.
At Christmas time, look for a seasonal production, such as “Miracle on 34th Street”, cleverly staged as 1940s radio play, with live (and visible) sound effects and period commercials, along with a special appearance by the “Andrews Sisters”. These holiday productions are a delight to look forward to all year.
The Theatre also holds workshops in acting, directing, stage management, and writing, taught by local and visiting professionals, allowing the community, especially young people, to hone their skills and learn more about the dramatic arts.
