This hidden gem just south of the Big River Bridge will reward you with postcard views of the quaint village of Mendocino and the magical spot where Big River meets the ocean. The view of the historic village, which is on the National Register of Historic, is unparalleled. From this secluded, peaceful spot, it’s easy to imagine that it’s still the 19th century, when the village was first settled.
Access to the overlook is south of the Big River Bridge, where Highway 1 meets Brewery Gulch Road, across from the Comptche-Ukiah Road. The trail is indicated by a large brown sign, and it’s a short and easy walk from the road to the overlook, past windswept trees. Arriving at the viewpoint, you will be astounded at the beauty of the panorama in front of you, from the wild ocean waves to the calmer swells of the estuary at the mouth of Big River, where there is a lovely beach. There is a bench where you can sit and take in the view and enjoy the serenity of this tranquil place.
The trail and overlook are open from dawn to dusk for day use only. No camping is permitted. Dogs are allowed on leash only. There is no entry fee and parking is free.
